Recap: Bike Fort Worth with Mayor Betsy Price

Almost sixty hardcore cyclists, some from Oakhurst and many more from other parts of the city, joined Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price on Wednesday, March 20, for a 5.2-mile ride through Oakhurst. Mayor Price and her staff were ecstatic with the turnout and reception and said this was the best event of its kind yet this year. They praised the ONA organizers and said others will have a high bar to top to surpass the spread Oakhurst put on.

Riders were impressed with Oakhurst's hills, the beauty of the neighborhood, and the friendliness of the neighbors. Oakhurst neighbors came out to talk with the mayor and cheer the group on as they left. Some residents stood on their front porches to wave as the mayor and crew rode by. The event started at 5:30pm, with the ride taking place from around 5:45-6:20. The mayor seemed reluctant to leave, as it was 7:00pm before she and her security aide loaded up their bikes and waved goodbye. The general consensus was that it was a great day and a nearly-perfect event. The mayor said she and Bike Fort Worth—or perhaps a walking town hall meeting—would be back in Oakhurst sometime soon!

Neighborhood News

Our neighbor Libby Willis writes:

1. The mayor's Bike Fort Worth event took place yesterday at Oakhurst Park. Many, many thanks to all who made it happen, including Glenda Shelton who organized the tables, refreshments, music, sound system, etc.; Phyllis and Fred Anglin, Sharon Buse and so many others (complete list of all the volunteers to be in the April Oak Leaflet). The mayor and her staff said it was the best of these events they have had this year and that Oakhurst set the bar very high.

2. Help out a fellow neighbor:  A neighbor wrote yesterday asking if we knew how many Oakhurst homeowners have had their roofs replaced due to damage from the April 2012 hail storm. This information could help convince the insurance company that they need to pay to redo the roof on her house because of that storm. If you've had your roof replaced because of damage from that April 2012 hail storm, PLEASE let us know with a quick email and provide your address. We'll compile the information and share with all.

3. The Spring Fort Worth Gallery Night is coming up on Saturday, March 23 from 2-10pm. Little Free Library Coming to Oakhurst - Your Books Needed!

Our neighbor Joy Roese writes...

"The Little Free Library started with a lone outpost in Hudson, Wisconsin and has snowballed into a feel-good national phenomenon that packs literacy, neighborhood bonding, civic pride an artistic creativity into one tidy package," wrote Steve Campbell in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in July 2012. When I saw this article, I thought it would be a perfect fit for our neighborhood!

The Little Free Library's mission statement is:
  • To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide;
  • To build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity, and wisdom across generation;
  • To build more than 2510 libraries around the world!
Our library will be located at the west end of Daisy (thanks to Linda Plemons!) This will be a 'take a book, leave a book' or 'take a book and return it when you are done' system. I need your help to get this project off the ground. We need books! If you have any books you think others would enjoy reading and would like to donate them, please call me at 817.319.3614 or drop off on my porch (2121 Yucca). We need adult and children's, fiction and non-fiction, just anything you think others would enjoy reading! Since the library is for all ages, please make sure books are appropriate. For more information, check out the website www.littlefreelibrary.org. More details to follow!
