Why Join ONA?
Oakhurst is a wonderful neighborhood to call home, and it's because so many of our residents are willing to lend a helping hand, look out for each other, and volunteer their efforts towards neighborhood events. In fact, Oakhurst Neighborhood Association is one of the most active voluntary neighborhood associations in Fort Worth.
Oakhurst has been selected as Fort Worth's Neighborhood of the Year three times—2006, 2010, and 2022.
The Oakhurst Neighborhood Association is an award-winning organization. In 2024, ONA was named Fort Worth's Best Neighborhood Association. And back in 2010, Fort Worth Weekly gave ONA its Critics' Choice Award for best neighborhood group in Fort Worth, stating:
Year after year, the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association just northeast of downtown is one of the busiest in the city. They don’t just talk it, they get out and do it, with monthly meetings, a beautification program, children’s activities, a citizens-on-patrol team, and more. Oakhurst also puts on barbecues and a Halloween costume contest and gives out a yard-of-the-month award. This year they’ve also been fighting two issues that leaders think will harm the community: a zoning change that would allow a metal recycling plant nearby and the use of Riverside Park as a floodwater storage area—a plan that would put a chunk of parkland beneath potentially contaminated water for parts of the year. Now that’s an active group.ONA has also received national recognition. In 2007 and 2011, ONA received awards from Neighborhoods USA for its programs. And our monthly newsletter, the Oak Leaflet—in publication since 1981—earned awards from Neighborhoods USA in 2012 and 2015.
We hold monthly meetings to address neighborhood needs and present programs of general interest to residents.
We hold regular meetings and social activities including National Night Out barbeques, neighborhood garage sales, "Halloweenie" Roast and Costume Contests, porch crawls, a neighborhood Christmas party, three different garden clubs, and more. Scroll down to "How to Get Involved" for more information.
We have a very active Citizens on Patrol organization, patrolling our neighborhood daily and providing residents with a monthly update on neighborhood security and safety.
We monitor Planning, Zoning, and Board of Adjustment cases in the neighborhood and regularly provide information about current cases at City Hall regarding issues that are important to the neighborhood. For more information on our elected officials, see Links of Interest.
We have delegates who represent Oakhurst at the Fort Worth League of Neighborhood Associations and the Riverside Alliance to ensure our community needs are addressed within our surrounding area, as well as in the city at large.
Oakhurst Neighborhood Association bylaws are found here.
